Ranking of newspapers in Norway 2023, by circulation
VG (Verdens Gang) is the newspaper with the highest circulation in Norway. In 2023, the paper's total circulation amounted to 307 thousand sold copies in the second half of the year, while the first half-year amounted to 289 thousand sold copies. Aftenposten came in second place, with around 250 thousand copies for each half of 2023.
Newspapers’ criteria
The ranking with the largest newspapers includes only newspapers that are published at least once a week. It was required that a newspaper has to inform about current issues and events, and take a real payment for subscriptions and loose sales. Additionally, both digital and print versions are contained in the circulation numbers. Aftenposten’s circulation, for example, amounted to roughly 119 thousand print and 243 thousand digital copies.
Decreasing circulation numbers
The circulation of Norwegian newspapers decreased in the last decades, from more than 3.1 million copies in 1990 to 2.1 million in the second half of 2019. Print versions still generate the most circulation revenue, although it decreased in the past years. In 2018, the revenue of print newspapers was roughly 5.3 billion Norwegian kroner, whereas digital newspapers made up 1.4 billion Norwegian kroner.
